The former brewery behind the Schönhof
Until the 19th century, wooden and half-timbered farm buildings stood in the backyard of the Schönhof. In 1831, a consortium of Görlitz citizens acquired the building complex in order to operate a brewery here. The new brewery buildings were erected in the farmyard: a malt house in the centre of the courtyard and a brewery with rooms for two large brewing kettles on the fish market.
The former malt house, the middle house, now houses exhibitions on the history of Silesia between the Napoleonic Wars and the end of the Second World War: from the reorganisation of Europe in 1815 after the defeat of Napoleon, which had an impact on Silesia, to industrialisation, the revolutionary uprisings, the founding of the empire and the two world wars, to the new demarcation of the Oder and Neisse rivers, which resulted in the expulsion of the German population from Silesia.
The art exhibition on the first floor of the middle house is dedicated to the “difficult path to modernity” and art in the early 20th century, when Wroclaw experienced the liberating awakening of the younger generation, which manifested itself in a new stylistic will in all areas of art. Despite all external adversities, a diverse cultural life developed from the 1920s onwards, which had an impact on the whole of Silesia until 1933.
