Silesia in the old days
The cultural landscape of Silesia was formed at a time when there were no nation states. Slavic tribes settled in the early Middle Ages and tapped into the fertile soil. The Polish Piast dynasty opened up the country to the west in the 13th century. German settlers pushed ahead with the expansion of the country, bringing with them new technologies and an advanced legal culture.
In a long peaceful process, Silesia grew into the German cultural sphere.
For over 200 years, until the Prussian conquest in 1740, the country belonged to the Habsburg Empire. During this time, Silesia underwent decisive changes, but also experienced profound crises.
The conflict between the emperors and the local estates was combined with the conflict between the denominations. The schism between the churches shook the country, but also released cultural energies.
The flourishing of literature, art and architecture in the Baroque era still characterises the image of Silesia today.
